RULES SUMMARY

This is a summary of the basic rules of sailboat racing. It is not intended as a substitute for the RACING RULES OF SAILING, a copy of which all racing sailors should own. The complete RACING RULES OF SAILING 2001-2004 can be found on the International Sailing Federation web site. Another basic rule summary is provided on the U.S. Sailing web site.

AVOID COLLISIONS!

(Part 2, Sec. B, Rule 14)

PORT - STARBOARD:

When boats are on opposite tacks, port tack keeps clear.

(Part 2, Sec. A, Rule 10)

WINDWARD - LEEWARD:

When boats are on the same tack, the windward boat keeps clear.
(Part 2, Sec. A, Rule 11)

OVERTAKING:

The boat clear astern must keep clear of the boat ahead.
(Part 2, Sec. A, Rule 12)

OVER EARLY:

If you are over the starting line early, keep clear of all boats that started properly as you return around the end of the line to restart.
(Part 3, Rule 29.1
& Part 2, Sec. D, Rule 20)

BUOY ROOM:

When you are about to round a mark, give all boats overlapping you on the inside room to pass the mark, if those boats established the overlap at least two boat lengths away from the mark.
(Part 3, Sec. C, Rule 18.2)

TOUCHING A MARK:

If you touch a mark, you may continue racing only after getting completely clear of other boats and then making one complete 360-degree turn (one tack and one jibe in the same direction).
(Part 3, Rule 31.2)

BARGING:

At the start, don't "barge". That means don't try to squeeze between a boat close to leeward of you and a starting line mark.
(Part 2, Sec. C, Rule 18.1)

PENALTY TURN:

If you are required to make a penalty turn for a foul other than touching a mark, you must get completely clear of other boats as soon after the incident as possible, and then make a 720-degree penalty turn (two complete 360-degree turns).
(Part 4, Rule 44.2)

LUFFING:

Before the starting signal a leeward boat may luff a boat to windward, but it must give the windward boat room to keep clear (Rule 11). After the signal the leeward boat can't sail above her proper course (Rule 17.1), so she must stop luffing and bear off to her proper course.
(Part 2, Sec. C, Rule 18.1)
